Love the Empire State Building? Then you’ll love the NY Skyride, one of New York’s top attractions. It will take you on a virtual reality tour of New York’s skyline via a specially designed 18 foot high (6 metres) HD screen and you’ll journey around nearly three dozen famous landmarks. The best part is that on your virtual helicopter ride, you’ll never have to leave the comfort of the Empire State Building, as the tour takes place on the 2nd floor. You’ll experience state of the art motion seats, amazing special effects and see New York literally come alive to you!  If you buy the combo ticket you can also fast track yourself into the Empire State Building Observatory on the 86th floor, where you’ll also save around 75% of the normal waiting time. Playing tourist in NYC doesn’t get more fun than this!

NY Skyride: What makes it different?

What makes the NY Skyride so special? Kevin Bacon’s dulcet tones narrating your 30 minutes adventure, for a start, and the fact that the NY Skyride is New York’s only virtual tour simulator.  It provides a great indoor activity if the weather outside is less than welcoming and is suitable for all ages, from children to adults. It will give you a visual overview of New York and point out some important landmarks for the children whilst delivering some spectacular views of the World Trade Centre in lights. If you are on a tight schedule, you’ll also benefit from buying the combo ticket which will reduce your wait time for the observatory by up to 75%, great for those days when you just can’t be bothered to queue. On really busy days you’ll save as much as 1 – 2 hours of waiting around. The digital technology in use is something you have to see for yourself, from custom made platforms and seats to an 18ft high screen and fantastic visual effects. It’s open from 8am to 10pm an amazing 365 days a year and offers entertainment, fun, safety and can be enjoyed whatever the weather!

NY Skyride vs. primary competitors (sites similar to NY Skyride)

Two competitors of the NY Skyride would be New York Helicopter tours and City Sights NY. New York Helicopter offers the ‘Liberty Tour’ which is one of their most popular tours. This will let you see the Statue of Liberty from the sky, look down upon Ellis and Governor’s Island, fly by the South Street Seaport, skim above the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges and more. While this is the real version of the tour above, the downside is that it is very expensive and the tour only lasts approximately 12 – 15 minutes. You’ll only see a fraction of what you’ll experience with the NY Skyride, especially if you buy the combo ticket where you’ll be able to see the sights from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building. While the virtual tour Skyride isn’t the real thing, it’s the next best thing and for those afraid of heights and air travel, much more relaxing!

The other way to see around 300 landmarks is of course to take a three day New York City Tour. This is a hop on, hop off double decker bus tour where you’ll get to see Uptown New York, Downtown New York, Harlem, Brooklyn and even a special city night tour. While this is a great way to see New York from the ground and take in the landmarks, you’ll be forced to wait around for buses and will be subject to the whims of the weather. Touring by bus is never pleasant on a steamy hot summer’s day or when the skies have opened with rain or worse. When comparing the price to that of the New York 3 Day Pass where over 40 attractions are included, the city tour pales in comparison. The New York Skyride offers that little something extra, which won’t fail to impress all the family.

NY Skyride: Pricing & packages

NY Skyride offers adult tickets for $29.00 and child tickets from $19.00. If you want to include the Empire State Observatory in your trip, tickets cost $45.00 for adults and $27.00 for children. If you want amazing value for money why not choose the New York 3 Day Pass, which gives entry to over 40 amazing New York attractions, not to mention discounts at theatres, restaurants and departments stores. The New York 3 Day Pass costs $150 for adults and $130 for children.

New York Helicopter’s Liberty Tour will cost $139 per person with an additional $20 added for Heliport fees.

The Super New York 3 Day Tour costs $82.00 per adult and $61 per child.

For an amazing virtual tour of New York, there is no-one who can even be compared to the NY Skyride for price or the sheer number of sights you’ll see. It gives you a real ‘feel’ of New York, in style and comfort! The New York Pass is incredible value for money too and is virtually unbeatable.

“A REALLY GOOD RIDE!” says winyou

Took a ride on the NY SKYRIDE...and I really enjoyed it! It's a virtual helicopter ride over New York City, and it definitely feels like you're in a real helicopter. Especially for out-of-town or foreign visitors, it gives a really good introduction to the city, "flying" over pretty much every major tourist attraction. To my knowledge, it's the only virtual ride of its kind in New York. The ride is in the Empire State Building, on the second floor. And because I bought a ticket to NY SKYRIDE, I didn't have to wait as long to get on the line to the Observation Deck on top of the building; visitors to the SKYRIDE wait on a quicker, much shorter line than visitors who are only going to the Observation Deck. I liked this ride! And I liked the shorter wait for the Observation Deck.

the kids want to go back!

Thursday, June 30, 2011 by NY Skyride Stories

I only live 100 miles from New York with 2 younger kids and I was thinking…after the museums, what are fun things to do in New York? I mean I’ve done the Circle Line Cruises, the Statue of Liberty and other activities but I’ve never taken the kids to the Empire State Building in NYC!

So we jumped in the car, parked (actually found a free spot on the street on Sunday!) just one block from the building. Then some guys approach us and start selling us on this thing…the New York Skyride. I’m thinking “Am I being had?” So I figured – they had badges and ID and I used a credit card that I could always dispute and bought the COMBO package of the Empire State Building and the Skyride. One of the claims was we would be able to cut our wait to the famous Empire State Building Observation Deck…and that’s what the kids wanted to do most!

They walked us in the side entrance of the building and before we knew it we were going into the Skyride. All I can say is, it may be a little dated but the kids LOVED it!! It was like those NYC helicopter tours but without the helicopter ticket price!! After half an hour it was up to the Observatory – we couldn’t have asked for a better day – you could see for miles. My only challenge was that there are no guides and no one to ask any questions…bummer. After half an hour we went back down, had lunch and took a leisurely drive home.

Its 2 weeks later and the kids are asking to go back!

“Perfect for kids! They loved it!” says Wesch

We were already at the Empire State Bldg, so figured we'd give it a try. It was a lot of fun! Our kids (8 & 5) loved it! If you are familiar with Disney, it's a cross between Soarin' and Star Tours, with NY as the scene. Kids enjoyed it much more than the 86th floor of the ESB, that's for sure. :)

“Combo Is Worth It” says GoCity

Reviewed 21 April 2010

The combination with the Empire State Building is a great value. Plus, the line at the Empire State Building was very long when we were there. The Skyride combo allowed us to skip most of the Empire State Building line. I would certainly recommend this attraction just for that. But, it was also nice to see a 'high-lite' of NYC.

Nicholette J from the UK says:

Was great, fantastic views from the top. The Sky ride is good fun, but my mum had to keep her eyes shut as she suffered motion sickness! The rest of us really enjoyed it though

In conclusion, whilst there are other ways to see hundreds of iconic landmarks in the New York cityscape, the New York Skyride offers a bird’s eye view of them in comfort and style from the Empire State Building, which is a must-see landmark in itself. If you want to get a little something extra out of your visit to New York, try flying by the seat of your pants, which conveniently will never leave the comfort of your seat.
